AustinKeymasterAcross the various Gator-Gate pieces of the puzzle. Proof of concept has been reached. We are now undergoing a design refactoring to clean up the architecture and prepare for an initial release. Modular design was built into the project from the start, allowing me to work on each piece independently.
I thought I’d share a practical example of why the design refactoring.
For the proof of concept, we were using more global hooks than necessary. WordPress can load the same TinyMCE editor in the admin and on the front end, but they are separate editor instances with different IDs, toolbars, and configurations.
Our philosophy is to solve the 90% use case simply and reliably, recognising that the final 10% often brings diminishing returns and extra overhead. We take a lean approach: maximum practical benefit, minimum unnecessary complexity.
We do this by targeting the bbPress topic and reply editors specifically, while leaving the standard WordPress admin post/page editor untouched. Keeping the changes contained reduces the risk of side effects, improves stability against other plugins and WordPress updates, and avoids interfering with unrelated editing workflows. It’s a deliberate trade-off: improve the experience where it’s needed while minimising impact on the wider WordPress environment.
Editor targeting:
Front-end topic/reply
– Location: Front-end bbPress form
– Editor type: bbPress custom form
– Editor ID: bbp_topic_content / bbp_reply_content
– Gets Table button? YesAdmin — create/edit forum
– Location: WordPress admin
– Editor type: Standard WordPress editor
– Editor ID: content
– Gets Table button? No
